Dr. Hugh M. Scott, 85, passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at Burke Medical Center. He was a native of Jenkins County and a lifelong resident of Burke County. Dr. Scott served in United States Navy and graduated from the University of Georgia Veterinary College. Upon graduation he opened Burke County Animal Hospital and concluded his veterinary career after retiring in 1994 from the USDA as a veterinary officer. He was a longtime volunteer coach with Burke County Recreation Department and Edmund Burke Academy. He coached the EBA middle school football team from 1993 to 2011, served has Chairman of the Board (1984-1999), and Board Member Emeritus. He received the honor of having the EBA sports complex named the Dr. Hugh M. Scott Athletic Complex in 2011. In 1996, he received The Dan Magill Award for loyalty, dedication, and commitment to the Bulldogs and the University of Georgia.He taught Sunday school for the youth and the Senior Women's Class at First Baptist Church for many years and more recently was a member of Botsford Baptist Church.
Surviving are, his wife, Eugenia B. Scott, his daughters, Gail S. Rockwell and husband Rocky of Waynesboro, Melissa A. Scott of Colbert, Ga., Georgia S. Hedlund and husband Jason of California; his grandchildren, Rev. Reuben L. Rockwell and wife Erin of Mobile, AL; Hugh S. Rockwell of Carrolton, Ga., Stephen W. Rockwell of Decatur, Meiranda Hedlund of California, Keaghan Hedlund of Hawaii, Keleigh Hedlund, Merrick Hedlund, Koulter Hedlund, Kiernan Hedlund all of California; two great grandchildren, Amelia Jane Rockwell, Henry Alan Rockwell and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, November 20, 2015 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at DeLoach-McKerley-Prescott Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, November 21, 2015 in the DeLoach-McKerley-Prescott Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Wayne Dixon and the Reverend Reuben Luckie Rockwell officiating.
Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Gardens.
Active Pallbearers will be Hugh S. Rockwell, Stephen W. Rockwell, Roy Jenkins, Lon Hankinson, Brigham Scott, and Jay Glisson.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Wayne Crockett, Buddy Etheridge, Dr. Johnny Christian, Edmund Burke Academy Board Members (past and present) and former coaches and players.
Remembrances may be made to the St. Jude's Children Hospital or Edmund Burke Academy.
