Waynesboro, GA - William A. "Buck" Brannen died Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at Burke Medical Center.He was born in Brooklet, GA (Bulloch County).He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the First Calvary Division in the Pacific, after which he became a certified private pilot.Mr. Brannen graduated from UGA with a BS and Masters Degree.He coached basketball in Midville and Waynesboro for eighteen years, chalking up 469 wins against 117 losses, including a State Championship in 1966.He retired as Assistant Superintendent from the Burke County Board of Education.He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Waynesboro and the Spares and Pairs Bible Study Class.He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Thompson Brannen.
He is survived by his daughter, Belinda Drexel and son-in-law, David Drexel, of Milledgeville; granddaughter, Emma Drexel of Atlanta; grandson, Brett Drexel of Milledgeville; and his devoted companion, Judy Burrows.
Visitation: 10:00-11:00 am Saturday, August 6, at the funeral home.
Following the visitation, the funeral will start at 11 am.Dr. G. Al Wright, Jr. will officiate.Pallbearers will be Dr. Walter Voyles, George Holloway, Charlie Johnson, Dr. B. Lamar Murray, Walt Seeger, Mutt Kennedy, Benjie Anderson, Ted Salter, Phil Chalker, Doug Day, J. D. Smith, Jerry Richardson, Joe Felton, Barney Johnson, Al Perkins, and Larry Swanson.The graveside service will start at 2:30 pm on Saturday at New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery, Hwy 24, Statesboro, GA30461.
