Atlanta, GA - Walter Marvin Lovett, Sr., 82, of Atlanta, formerly of Waynesboro, passed away during the night Monday before Christmas after a long and courageous battle against Alzheimers.Walter was born in Burke County Georgia on April 5, 1933, the middle of five children, to Julia Ward Lovett and James Cuylor Lovett.He graduated from Waynesboro High School and later graduated with a degree in Agricultural Engineering from UGA.He remained a true Georgia Bulldog for life.He served in the U.S. Army and the Georgia National Guard and remained in the armed services until he retired after 20 years as a Major.His family vacations were often working vacations as he fulfilled his military duties at various bases throughout the country. He was a competitive member of the National Rifle Team for many years.Walter was a thirty year employee of the Georgia Power Company where he epitomized the company's slogan "a citizen wherever we serve." He was a loaned executive to the United Way for many years.Walter was also active with many military volunteer organizations throughout his life.He also served in the Chamber of Commerce for many years.He was a lifelong donor of blood to the Red Cross. He was also active in his church. Walter had the Olympic movement in his blood. He and his wife travelled to Barcelona and Salt Lake City for the Games.He along with many family members volunteered during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and were all immersed in Olympic pin life for the 1996 Games and many years following. Walter loved to dance and could frequently be seen dancing the night away.He never met a stranger and he loved being around people.Family and helping others were always important to him.No matter what his own situation, Walter would always roll up his sleeves to help anyone when help was needed.He was full of love and energy throughout his life.He was almost impossible to keep up with.He was always working or helping others in some way throughout his life.Walter is survived by his wife Shirley Smyly Lovett, a son Walter M. Lovett, Jr, a daughter Lisa Lovett McDaniel (Tim), step- sons Norman Gibson (Patty) and Daniel Gibson, 3 grandchildren that he adored, Kelly, Kevin and Ryan McDaniel, all of Atlanta, sister Rose Lovett Gibbs (Ed) of Hiawassee, GA, sister Dell Lovett Coyle of Columbia, MD, brother Charles Lovett (Lanell) of Augusta, GA. and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother James Lovett, James' wife Betty and Dell's husband Frank.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, December 29 at DeLoach-McKerley-Prescott Funeral Home, 220 E 6th St, Waynesboro, GA 30830.The family will receive friends at 11:00 am until the start of the service.Interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery in Waynesboro, GA. Dr. G. Al Wright, Jr. will officiate. Pallbearers will be Walter's son-in-law, Tim McDaniel, his grandsons Kevin McDaniel and Ryan McDaniel, step son Norman Gibson, and nephews Tony Woods and Wesley Woods. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home.
