Waynesboro, GA - Born August 2, 1936, Velma Sowell Gay left her earthly home on November 18, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.
Velma, originally from Jenkins County, married the love of her life James Gay, had three children while living in Perkins, GA and eventually moved to Waynesboro. She was a past member of Magnolia Baptist Church in Perkins, Rosemont Baptist Church in Waynesboro, and for the last 47 years was in fellowship at Burkehaven Chapel in Waynesboro where she served as a children's leader, leader in the women's ministries, a hostess and prayer warrior.Velma was known as a caregiver who should have been a nurse, an excellent homemaker and organizer, a homestyle cook that had friends always asking for her recipes, a lady with a sense of humor and one who never met a stranger. She loved teaching children, sewing and altering clothes, and large family gatherings. Along with James, they raised their children to love the Lord, respect their elders, to be honest hard workers, and to believe in family values.Velma was always bold in sharing her faith and serving her God, but her family was her pride and joy starting with her husband. She loved her 9 grandchildren and was proud she was able to attend each one's wedding. Her love grew even more as she became a great grandmother to four boys and five girls. As part of the ministry of her church, she served as the Administrative Assistant and Kindergarten Phonics Tutor at Burkehaven Christian School, taught Backyard Bible Clubs and served as a counselor at Camp Good News in Valdosta, GA. If there ever was a true example of a Proverbs 31:10-31 wife and mother and a Titus 2:3-5 woman, it was her.
