Steve William Crawford, 85, loving husband, father, and grandfather went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. He was born in Savannah, GA in 1936, grew up in Pooler, GA and was a resident of Waynesboro, GA since 1963. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry in 1958. He then won a fellowship from Union Bag-Camp in Savannah to continue his studies at Yale University where he received his Master of Science degree in Forestry in 1960. He returned to Georgia and as a Captain in the Army Signal Corps, he was mobilized to Fort Meade during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. While in the Washington DC area, he met his beloved wife, Martha who was living there and working as a secretary for the FBI. The two returned to Waynesboro and were married in 1963 in her hometown of Shannon, Mississippi.
He soon began working for Weathers Wood and Timber (Tommy Weathers) and purchased the company which later became Steve Crawford Forest Products, retiring in 2003. He was admired in his field and served on the boards of the American Pulpwood Association and the Georgia Forestry Association where he became an honorary lifetime member of both. He was also a member of the Society of American Foresters, the Forest Landowners Association, and the Burke County Forestry Board. Steve was a past president of the UGA Forestry Alumni Association and a member of the UGA President's Club. He was an avid Bulldawg fan and very rarely missed attending a home game as long as his health allowed.
Locally, as a member of First Baptist Church, he served on the board of Deacons, taught children's Sunday School, Royal Ambassadors, and was a devoted choir member for over two decades. He served on the Board of Directors of First National Bank of Waynesboro and was a past President of the Waynesboro Rotary Club. He is most remembered, however, for his jokes and antics as the club's Sergeant of Arms for many years. He also served on the board of Edmund Burke Academy, his children's school, and he delighted in attending their literary and sports events.
Steve was preceded in death by his wife Martha, his parents, Thomas and Evelyn Crawford and two of his brothers, the Reverend Edward Crawford (Mary Nell), and Lt Col David Crawford (Janice).
He was dearly loved by his children, Sonja Crawford Kunzendorf (Eric), Valerie Crawford, and Steve Crawford, Jr. as well as his grandchildren, Crawford Kunzendorf, Liam Kunzendorf, Ginny Lane Crawford, Claudia Crawford, and William Crawford. He is also survived by siblings, Frank Crawford (Joe), Melba Crawford Smith (Foy), and Gloria Crawford McCoy (Mike) and by his extended family including numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
A family graveside service was held at Burke Memorial Gardens in Waynesboro on Saturday, November 13, 2021, where he was laid to rest with his wife Martha (2014). The family wishes to thank the many kind caretakers, clergy, and social workers at Brentwood Terrace Healthcare and the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home (The Blue Goose). Remembrances can be made to First Baptist Church of Waynesboro.
