Simeon Alexander Gray, 94, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior at his home on January 17, 2021. He was born in Augusta on April 24, 1926, as the only child S.A. Gray, Sr. and Agnes McConnico Gray. A lifelong resident of Waynesboro, he graduated from Waynesboro High School and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Clemson University before entering the Army during World War II. He was seriously injured in Germany and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and was credited with the Battle of the Bulge.
After his service in the Army, he graduated from Georgia Teachers' College (Georgia Southern). He taught school one year and spent the rest of his career with the US Postal Service as a clerk and rural mail carrier. He loved the Lord, serving as a deacon and children's Sunday School teacher at his beloved First Baptist Church. He was a regular member of the former BI-LO Coffee Club. For years, Alec was often seen riding his bicycle all over Waynesboro and Burke County.
He was a gracious, kind Southern gentleman always thinking of others and putting them first. He was a faithful, devoted husband, and a loving father.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joyce Blocker Gray; a son, John Timothy Gray of Waynesboro; a sister-in-law, Mary B. Hammond; a brother-in-law, Don Blocker; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends at 10:30am Wednesday, January 20, 2021,prior to the 11:00am service at First Baptist Church, Waynesboro with Dr. G. Al Wright, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Magnolia Cemetery. The family asks that masks be worn and social distancing be observed.
