Sidney Clarence Cox, Iii

July 10, 1936 — June 22, 2024

Sidney Clarence Cox, III,87, passed away at his home on June 22, 2024. Sidney was born in Waynesboro on July 10, 1936, and raised in Burke County where he attended Waynesboro High School. He graduated from Davidson College and honed his insurance skills in Jacksonville and Orlando. In 1967 following the tragic loss of his brother in Vietnam, Sidney returned to Waynesboro at his father’s request and became his father’s business partner at Cox Insurance and Real Estate. He eventually took over as president of the business working alongside his son, Sid, as he had done with his own father. In addition to his acute business skills, Sidney was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating. He took advantage of every possible opportunity to be outdoors, and he combined his love of Burke County and of nature by successfully leading a grassroots effort to prevent a lead smelter from locating to Waynesboro. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir. He also participated in the Waynesboro Community Choir. Sidney was an active member of the Rotary Club for many years, serving as President. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce, the board of the Development Authority of Burke Conty, and he was the first chairman of the Burke County Planning Commission. Throughout his life he studied history and enjoyed discussing historical events and global affairs. Sidney was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney Jr. and Emily Cox; his brother, Jack Cox; and his grandson, William Tyndale Cox.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Cox of Waynesboro; four children, Steve(Robin) Cox of Columbia, SC, Sid Cox of Waynesboro, Ria (Brian) Sheridan of Washington, DC, Jackson (Karen) Cox, II, of Waynesboro; two stepchildren, Kimberly (Patrick) Belk of Alexander, Carlyle Jerome (Kristina) Broome, II, of Atlanta; grandchildren.
