WAYNESBORO, Ga. – Mr. Robert Marvin Saxon, Sr., 84, of 114 Lake Bluff Dr., went home to be with the Lord on May 28, 2017, in his residence following an extended illness.Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at First Baptist Church in Waynesboro.The family will receive visitors beforehand at 1 p.m. Dr. G. Al Wright, Jr., will officiate the service. Following the service, a private graveside ceremony for family only will take place at Burke Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include a wife, Gloria Mills Saxon, Waynesboro; daughter, Jeanie Saxon Blackburn (Rickie), Waynesboro; and one son, Robert Marvin (Rob) Saxon, Jr., Macon. Grandchildren are Jason Blackburn (Caroline), Ben Blackburn (Leigh), and Jan Blackburn. Great-grandchildren are Mills Blackburn, Sadie Chance, and John Luke Chance. Sisters are Virginia Bolton, Audrey Smith, Rosemary Patti, and Carolyn Rhoden.Brothers are Tom Saxon and Douglas Saxon.Mr. Saxon was preceded in death by his parents, Linwood and Claudia Mae Saxon; brother, Roy Douglas Saxon; and sisters, Jewell Saxon and Marilyn Whitley.

One of ten children, Mr. Saxon was born on October 28, 1932 to Linwood Douglas Saxon and Claudia Mae Syms in McBean, Georgia. Following his graduation from Waynesboro High School, he enlisted in the Army until 1960.As part of the 101st Airborne Division, he faithfully served our country during the Korean War.

Second to Jesus Christ, the greatest love of Mr. Saxon's life was Gloria Jean Mills from Sardis. The two lovebirds married on June 28, 1959.The couple shared over 60 years together, and he would tell you that she was the greatest gift in his life.

God and family were central to Mr. Saxon's life.When his children, Jeanie and Rob, came along, his family had even greater purpose.He was very involved in their lives.Whether breaking down barriers for his son or serving as a model gentleman for his little girl, his children always counted on him.In 1998, the Saxons were recognized as the Georgia Family of the Year by the Georgia Federation of Women's Clubs.

Throughout his life, Mr. Saxon epitomized a humble, servant's heart.This nature was evident through his service at First Baptist Church in Waynesboro. Whether as a deacon, chair of the transportation committee, or a cook at a Sunday school cookout, he was always willing to give feet to his faith.He was an active member of the "Spares and Pairs" Sunday school class.

Mr. Saxon had two careers. During his employment of 35 years with Chevrolet-Oldsmobile, he served as General Manager and Vice-President of Wardlow Chevrolet-Oldsmobile, Inc. until the death of the owner, Ben F. Wardlow.He later retired from the Burke County Board of Education as Transportation Director for the school system after six years.

Waynesboro was very important to Mr. Saxon.As a fixture in the Waynesboro Exchange Club, he served the community through countless civic service projects, annual fairs, and educational programs.In 1972-1973, the Exchange Club elected him president during their silver anniversary, and he was instrumental in the club receiving its first ever "Big E" award.

Pallbearers will be Tony Saxon, Brian Saxon, Jason Saxon, Randy Dixon, Michael Dixon, Gary Mills, Billy Mills, and Sean Richardson.Honorary pallbearers will be NASCAR racing buddies, members of the Waynesboro Exchange Club, and the "Spares and Pairs" Sunday school class at First Baptist Church.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Waynesboro, Georgia, Building Fund or Regency Hospice of Augusta, Georgia.
