Waynesboro, GA - Rev. J. Hyatt Smith, 81, entered into rest Friday, March 4, 2011, at his home after an extended illness.A native of Carrollton, GA, he has been a resident of Waynesboro since the age of 7.He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.Rev. Smith retired as a United Methodist minister, having served at many churches throughout the South Georgia Conference.
He is survived by his wife of forty years, Enid Vargas Smith; five children, Hyatt Thomas Smith (Robin) of Algon Quin, IL, Rev. Susan Poynter and her fianc, Jim Platt, of Edmore, MI, Joey Smith (Lisa) of Gainesville, GA, Jessica Beckman of Waynesboro, and Jeannie Smith and her fianc, Steven Sowles, of Savannah; two sisters, Dorma Perry of Waynesboro and Josie Rangler of Centreville, MI; sister-in-law, Eunice Mallard Smith of Waynesboro; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 6, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
The funeral will be conducted on Monday, March 7, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Waynesboro.The Reverends Sam Vernon, David Perry, and Susan Poynter will officiate.Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Gardens where military honors will be rendered.
