Girard, GA. – Ralph Holderith Grunewald passed away peacefully January 16, 2015 at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, GA. His memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at 4:30 p.m. at DeLoach-McKerley Funeral Home, 842 N. Liberty Street, Waynesboro, GA, 30830, with visitation immediately following at the funeral home. His grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Ralph Holderith Grunewald was born April 10, 1924 in New Orleans, LA to Frank J. Grunewald, Sr. and Myrtle Holderith Grunewald. He was a lifelong Methodist beginning as a child in New Orleans, LA at Napoleon Ave. Methodist Church and after relocating to Tallahassee he was a charter member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.He was actively employed most of his entire life and worked into his eighties. He grew up in New Orleans, LA attending local public schools, he then attended Tulane University and after WWII began joined the United States Marine Corps serving with 5th Marine Division, F-2-26 machine gun platoon on Iwo Jima where he was seriously wounded. Following WWII he reentered college and married his wife of 60 plus years and started a family. He then joined his father at Capital Hide and Fur, Inc. until he was recalled from the U. S. Marine Corps Reserves to active duty and served in Korea with the 1st U. S. Marine Division again suffering injuries that affected him the rest of his life. When he returned from Korea and with the growth of his family he began his career at Winn Dixie retiring after more than 30 years in management,he then began his career at Plant Vogtle and remained there until he retired from Southern Company after more than 10 years of service, finally working with Sunbelt Medical Services, Inc. where he completed his formal work career and then set out to spend his time following the developments of his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and other family members with his wife of over 60 years, Georgia Quick Grunewald and his child Rita in Girard, gardening, reading, trying to maintain the old house all the while actively watching the Atlanta Braves. He remained a longstanding loyal member of Girard United Methodist Church.
Ralph Holderith Grunewald is survived by his daughter Rita C. Grunewald of Girard, GA, his son, Cameron (Donna) of Waynesboro, GA, his son, Eddie (Kathy) of Girard, GA and Oyster Bay, FL, his son Paul (Nancy) of Huntersville, NC and his son, Andre' (Debi) of Bradenton, FL. He is also survived by many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other close family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Quick Grunewald, his parents, his only brother, Frank J. Grunewald, Jr. and his eldest daughter, Sharon. He loved his work, his family and a straightforward honest way of life to the exclusion of all else and lived for each.
