Quartus Urbane Lively, Jr.

September 6, 1951 — June 26, 2023

Quartus Urbane Lively, Jr., 71, was called home on June 26, 2023. He was born on September 6, 1951, in Waynesboro to the late Kathryn G. and Q.U. Lively, Sr. and was has been a lifetime resident. He attended Waynesboro High School and went on to serve in the Army.

Urbane married Susan Barlow in 1971 and had two babies by 1974. He was a devoted husband and best friend to his “Susie Q” for 52 years. He was an adored daddy to Shannon and Art. Urbane was the oldest brother to Don, Sherry, and Bill; they were siblings as well as friends. At the age of 51, he became a Poppy. Nothing brought him greater joy than his six granddaughters, Maisey, Rilyn, Saylor, Wiley Jo, Liza, and Birdie. He adored these girls and doted on them excessively.

Urbane wore several different hats over the years. He was a well-loved and appreciated mailman in Waynesboro for 35 years. He loved people and seeing his “regulars” every day on his mail route. He became a Jaycee in his early 20’s and made lifelong friends. As a Jaycee, he and fellow members ran The Empty Stocking Fund, providing Christmas presents for children in need. He was a lifetime member of the Jaycees and a member of The Rebel Corp. Urbane was a softball pitcher himself but most importantly a beloved ball coach. He touched many lives over the years teaching girls and boys softball techniques and lots of life lessons. Urbane loved Jesus and his Botsford Baptist Church family. He was a past deacon and sang in the choir for many years.

To meet Urbane was to immediately love him. He never met a stranger and made everyone he met feel important. He loved life, living it colorfully and fully and will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his loving wife Susan Barlow Lively; two children, Shannon Lively Norton and Quartus Urbane “Art” Lively III (Amy); three siblings, Don Lively, Sherry Brinson (Larry); and Bill Lively (Debbie); six granddaughters, Maisey, Rilyn, and Saylor Norton and Wiley Jo, Liza, and Birdie Lively; and many Lively and Barlow nieces, nephews, and cousins.
