Sardis-Mrs. Mattie Lee Long, 95, entered into her eternal rest Wednesday, April 19, 2017. Mrs. Long was a native of Glascock County and lifelong resident of Burke County. She was a very active and the oldest member of the Sardis United Methodist Church, serving on the administrative board, treasurer, and taught the Joy Sunday School Class. She was a secretary for SGA School and worked with her husband, the late John Rayford Long, in their family businesses, Long Oil Company and the Sardis Bus Station. Mrs. Mattie was best known for her kind generosity, helping folks in need, no matter what the need may have been.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded death by her parents, Ira O Black and Annie Vickery Black; her sisters, Lexie Bazemore and Margie Black; and her brothers, Ira H. Black and Grady Black.
Surviving are her sons, Jerry Long and wife Sandra of Sardis and Thomas Long of Braselton, Ga.; her grandchildren, Cleve Longand wife Allison of Buford, Ga., Lisa Sherrill and husband Glenn of Charlotte, N.C., Donna Garner of Jefferson, Ga., Pam Rohach of Elberton, Ga., and Kim Baldwin and husband Floyd of Maysville, Ga.; her great grandchildren, Avery Long, Cooper Long, Jack Sherrill, Will Sherrill, Austin Garner, Andrew Garner, Alexandria Garner, Madison Baldwin, Jackson Baldwin, and Grace Baldwin; three step grandchildren, Michelle Hargrove and husband Rickey of Millen, Tonya Dixon and husband Chip of Sardis, and Sandi Clark and husband Eric of Appling; and five step great grandchildren, Dylan Hargrove, Casie Hargrove, Garrett Dixon, Cole Clark, and Asher Clark.
Funeral Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, April 23, 2017, at the Sardis United Methodist Church with the Reverend Steve Sirmons and Reverend Janet Odegaard officiating. Burial will follow in the Sardis Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Active Pallbearers will be Sherril Black, Tommy Black, Randy Black, Glenn Bazemore, Gary Bazemore, and Roger Bazemore.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Hubert Reddick, Thomas Cullen, Arthur Long, Danny Nelson, and Norman Elliott.
Remembrances may be made to the Sardis United Methodist Church.
