Waynesboro, GA- Mary Elizabeth Powell Singletary, 89, went home to be with her Lord Wednesday, May 29, 2013. She was born March 3, 1924 in Vienna, GA to the late Julius Floyd Powell and Lena Pearl Smith Powell. On May 9, 1942, she married Charlie B. Singletary, Sr. When Charlie was stationed overseas during WWII, Mary was a welder on the ship dock in Jacksonville, FL on the St John's River. After the war, they farmed and started a family in South GA until moving to this area in 1951. They continued to farm together while he worked for the next 25 years at the VA Hospital. In 1962, she went to work at Gracewood State School and Hospital, where she worked with special needs children. After they both retired, they continued to farm, raise cattle, and bought a home at the lake, where they enjoyed fishing, gardening, and retirement. They moved back to their home in Waynesboro in the mid 1980s.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie B. Singletary, Sr.; her son, Charlie B. Singletary, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Carol Diane Singletary; 2 son-in-laws, William L. Hawkins and James Edward Loren, Sr.; 2 great grandsons, Ashton Gray and Joah Lane Hawkins; and great granddaughter, Brittney Lee Jernigan.
She is survived by 5 daughters, Donna Self (Terry) of Waynesboro, Sue Johnson (Vic) of Grovetown, Jane Loren of Augusta, Jennifer Hawkins of Dearing, and Babs Bourne (Bob) of Fries, VA; 17 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Visitation was from 6-8pm Friday, May 31 at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 11am Saturday, June1 at Crossroads Baptist Church. Pastor Josh Williams and Pastor Mike Andrews will officiate. Interment will follow at Hephzibah-Vance Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lee Hawkins, Lynn Hawkins, Larry Hawkins Jr., Gabrielle Johnson, Chase Johnson, Terry Self Jr., John Buchwitz, and Christopher Bishop
