Ms Mary Lucile Chance, 91, entered into rest Sunday June 5, 2016 at the home of Grady and Harriet Dixon in Sardis, GA. She is survived by her cousins, friends and family who loved her dearly. Her memorial service will be held at 3pm Sunday, June 12 at the Sardis United Methodist Church with Reverend Steve Sirmons and Reverend Janet Odegard officiating. Gloria Saxon, a special friend, will be providing music.
Mary was born December 28, 1924 in Jenkins County as the only daughter to Mr. Mills P. Chance and Gladys Rackley Chance. She grew up in the surrounding area and graduated from Sardis High School in 1942. Upon graduation she went to work at the Augusta Arsenal during World War II.
After the war she graduated from the University of Georgia with her bachelor's degree in Sociology and gained her masters at Tulane University. Mary retired from the Department of Family & Children Services of the State of Georgia in Atlanta where she made her home for 50 years. She had a successful second career in real estate for a number of years.
While in Atlanta she made many friends and contributed to her community in many ways. She was instrumental in getting her street, Saint Charles Place in the Virginia Highlands, registered in the National Historical Registry. Mary was a long time member of Northside Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA where she served as a Deaconess. She was a member of the Rhododendron Women's Club, the oldest in the state of Georgia, as well as the Atkins Park Garden Club and the Camellia Society of Georgia. Mary was also a member of the Atlanta History Society, the Atlanta Humane Society, the High Museum, the Atlanta History Center and the Fern Bank Museum.
Mary was dedicated to her family's history and spearheaded family reunions and the upkeep of an abandoned family cemetery. She enjoyed many overseas adventures and hosted foreign visitors from many countries while being a member of the Atlanta Friendship Force. Her passion in life was to make the world a better place. Mary touched many people and we are all thankful for the privilege of knowing her and the impact she's made on each of our lives.
In her last years, Mary was cared for by loving family who sends their gratitude to St Joseph Hospice and Dr Bonnie Jenkins. At her wishes her body was donated to science at Emory University. In lieu of flowers, please donate to one of her memberships.
