Martyn Gerry Hirshman

Martyn Gerry Hirshman, 76, of Hephzibah, GA entered into rest December 2, 2022.

Gerry was born June 27, 1946, the first of five children, to Edith E. Thompson and Girard H. Hirshman in Washington, D. C. Raised in a close knit bunch, Gerry helped care for his mom and younger siblings when times were hard for his family. At 17, he began to work at Saint Elizabeth’s hospital in D. C., serving the needs of emotionally troubled youth.

He continued for over 42 years in this career, simultaneously raising a daughter and earning his bachelor’s degree in his late 40s, the first in his family to do so.  He spent the second half of his career working in patient care and research in schizophrenia, relocating until retirement to NIMH at the University of Massachusetts.

After retiring in 2004, Gerry and his wife, Tina, moved to Hephzibah and lived the quiet and simple life they desired. Gerry encouraged his daughter and the younger generations of his family to pursue their education and serve their neighbors and families with love and commitment.

Gerry was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kerry and Perry. He is survived by his devoted wife of 18 years, Tina Ping Hirshman, and his daughter Jennifer Coble, her husband, Ed, and their children: Claire, William, Vivienne, Colette, and Drew of Roswell, NM. He is also survived by his only sister, Teri Wenger (Lee), his youngest brother Berry, two sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
