Martha Miles Chambers

August 17, 1933 — January 19, 2025

Martha Miles Chambers, 91, died peacefully at home on Sunday, January 19, 2025. She was born on August 17, 1933, in Carroll County, Georgia. She was the oldest of five daughters born to James Taylor (J.T.) Miles and Nellie Carter Miles.

Martha was a multitalented, generous person. In addition to being a wonderful, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a dedicated nurse, she enjoyed arranging flowers, writing poetry, singing, observing the beauty of nature through her kitchen window, watching Braves baseball, and cooking. Her biscuits were her “claim to fame,” and she especially enjoyed making biscuits for Fred.

She met Fred Chambers, the love of her life, in the fall of 1953, while she was a nursing student at Georgia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. They were married March 5, 1954, soon after she graduated, and they were married for 67 years, until Fred's death in 2021.

She began her nursing career as a surgical nurse in Athens, Georgia, while Fred finished his degree at the University of Georgia. Her career continued when they moved to Waynesboro in 1957, where she worked the night shift at Burke County Hospital; she later served as Director of Nurses there. In 1970, she began her 26 years of leadership at Gracewood State School and Hospital, eventually becoming a Unit Director.

Fred and Martha were charter members of Rosemont Baptist Church. Her many contributions to Rosemont included singing in the choir and creating flower arrangements for Sunday services. After her retirement, she volunteered in the church kitchen, preparing meals for Wednesday night church dinners. She also served as a mentor for teenagers in the church youth group, and for several years she was Rosemont’s representative in the Hephzibah Baptist Association.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and by three of her four sisters. She is survived by her five children: Carol Davis (Walker), Carlton Chambers (Becky), Joan Perry (Kent), Tommy Chambers (Angela), and Laurie Hilburn (Rusty); her sister Frances Miles Fowler; 12 grandchildren: Ben Davis (Emily), Katherine Davis Stang (Rob), Andy Davis (Emily), Ashley Chambers, Amber Chambers Richards (Austin), Stephen Perry (Jessica), Christopher Perry (Lindsey), Lauren Perry Sightler (Josh), Riley Chambers (Katie), Taylor Chambers (Abigail), Alexa Gregory Davis (Cale), and Chandler Gregory (Brittany);  12 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at Rosemont Baptist Church, 522 Highway 25, Waynesboro, on Saturday, January 25th, at 11:30 a.m.  Family members will greet friends in the church sanctuary, starting at 10:00 a.m. The family will gather at a later time for a private burial service.

Martha's grandsons will be her pallbearers.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Lena Royal, Ella Mack, Rose Warren, Karen Geeter, Rose Landis, and numerous others who have provided loving care for Martha and Fred throughout the last several years.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Rosemont Baptist Church Vision Fund.
