St. Simons Island, Ga.- Lt. Col., U.S. Army Retired Judson Holmes Wynne, 88, a resident of St. Simons Island, died Tuesday, September 9, 2008 in the St. Vincent's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. A native of Sardis, Ga., Col. Wynne had been a resident of St. Simons since 1970. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, and retired after 23 years of service. He was also a member of the Sardis Baptist Church in Sardis, Ga. He was a loving and generous father, grandfather, brother and husband. He believed in family first and he took care of his family his entire life. He had a playful spirit, and loved to joke and kid people. He and his family enjoyed their "Happy Hour" at the Crow's Nest where they enjoyed French wine or dirty martinis, and good conversation. He was a world traveler, lived in France, and was a huge fan of western novels. In high school, he was an accomplished runner, where, at age 17, he placed second place in the state finals in the 440 yard dash. As a Lieutenant Colonel, he received 2 Bronze Stars for valor, and numerous other commendations and awards. As he reached his golden years, he continued to grow and evolve. He actually visited the Grand Canyon in his mid-80s, where he said "words cannot describe what I see." Three months ago, at the age of 88, he started recycling at his home. He wanted to leave the world a better place. He was proud of his family, and they are very proud of him. He was married 53 years and was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Maye Wynne in 1999. They were former owners of the Sailfish Hotel (later Sea Gate Inn) and The Ship House. Survivors are his daughter, Melanie Wynne Gregory of St. Simons, grandson, J. Judson Wynne of Flagstaff, Az., granddaughter, Kimberly Lynn Gregory of St. Simons, brother, John Thomas Wynne (Martha) of Sardis, Ga., long-time family friend Dr. Lynn Hicks, St. Simons, and three nephews.
Graveside Services will full military honors will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday, September 13, 2008 at the Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Ken Nichols officiating. The family wishes to thank the Southeast Georgia Health System physicians and staff of PCCU for the excellent care provided over the years. "Ya'll meant a lot to him". In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made either to the Sardis Baptist Church, Sardis, Ga. or the donor's choice.
