Judge George W. Fryhofer

He was the loving husband of Ellen Hodges Fryhofer, who predeceased him.Judge Fryhofer was born on March 8, 1927, in Washington, D.C.His parents were the late George W. Fryhofer and Ruth Green Fryhofer.In 1944, he graduated from Waynesboro High School, where he was president of his class.Upon graduation, at age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served through the duration of World War II.Following the end of the war, he went on to earn his B.A. degree from Emory College in 1949 and J.D. degree from Emory Law School in 1950.At Emory, he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity, the Omicron Delta Kappa leadership fraternity, and the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.He also sang with the Emory Glee Club, where he was business manager.After obtaining his law degree, he moved to Augusta and practiced law with the Fulcher law firm from 1951 to 1954.It was in Augusta that he met Ellen Hodges, a young teacher in the Richmond County school system.They married on April 2, 1955, and returned to his childhood hometown of Waynesboro, where he opened his own law office.
From 1961 to 1963, he served as Solicitor of the State Court of Burke County.In 1963, he was appointed by Gov. Carl Sanders as Judge of the State Court of Burke County and was re-elected many times over the next 37 years, until his retirement in 2000.Throughout his 50 years as a member of the bar, he tried cases in Superior Court and federal court in the CSRA and all over the state.In 1968 and again in 1977, his trials set the record for the largest personal injury verdicts in the state at that time.In 1968, he was elected President of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association.In 1978, he was inducted into the Inner Circle of Advocates, a national organization limited to 100 members who had obtained jury verdicts of $1 million or more.He was also a member of the American Bar Association, American Association for Justice (formerly known as the American Trial Lawyers Association), and the State Bar of Georgia.
Judge Fryhofer was active in his community as well.He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Waynesboro, where he taught Sunday School, and served as Chairman of both the Administrative Board and the Board of Trustees.He also served as President of the Waynesboro Exchange Club, President of the Waynesboro Country Club, Commander of the American Legion Post, and member of the Rotary Club.
Judge Fryhofer was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.He was a gifted singer and raconteur, who delighted in performing at any opportunity.He was also an avid sportsman, who relished quail, dove, deer and turkey hunting with his friends, children, and grandchildren.He especially enjoyed entertaining guests at his pond and watching them reel in a trophy bass.
Judge Fryhofer is survived by his son, George W. Fryhofer III, and daughter-in-law, Dr. Sandra Adamson Fryhofer, of Atlanta; daughter, Vera Lynn Fryhofer Dent, and son-in-law, Dr. Jeffrey J. Dent, of Augusta; grandchildren Sandra Lynne Fryhofer, George William Fryhofer IV, William Michael Dent and Virginia Ellen Dent.
The family will receive friends at DeLoach-McKerley Funeral Home in Waynesboro from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., on Friday, June 27.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 28, at the First United Methodist Church in Waynesboro, Rev. Jimmy Cason officiating, with burial following in Burke Memorial Gardens, Highway 24 South, Waynesboro.If so desired, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 802 Liberty Street, Waynesboro, Georgia30830.
