John Thomas Hamilton Sr., 91, entered into rest Wednesday, March 13, 2019. Mr. Hamilton was a native and lifelong resident of Burke County. He retired from SRS after 40 years of service, served as Mayor of Sardis from January 1998 to December 2009 and had served as a City Councilman for a number of years prior to becoming Mayor. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a member of the Sardis Baptist Church, the Mayfield Hunting Club, Masonic Lodge #385, Shriner, Eastern Star and the American Legion Post 180. Mr. Hamilton was avid hunter and enjoyed all types of flowers. He was preceded in death by his brother, W.L. Hamilton and his sister, Naomi Nail.
Surviving are his wife, Marlene N. Hamilton of Sardis; his children, Nora Lamb and husband Robert of Augusta, Scarlett Walker and husband Bobby of Hephzibah, John T. Hamilton Jr. and wife Belinda of Sardis, Susan Dixon of Waynesboro, Lisa Tammaro and husband David of Waynesboro, Sallie Mobley and husband Mac of Girard, Betsy Keen and husband J.R of Sardis, Ester Dixon and husband Paul Jensen of Waynesboro, Darlene Richardson and husband Sammy of Millen and Hope Pruitt and husband Matt of Perkins; his brother, Herman Hamilton and wife Barbara of Sardis; 21 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2019, at the Sardis Baptist Church with the Reverend Brad Boynton and Chaplain Susan Galasso officiating. Burial will follow in the Sardis Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Service.
Active Pallbearers will be John Dixon, Ryan Hamilton, Brandon Hamilton, Dale Hamilton, Billy Hamilton, and James Dixon.
Remembrances may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project or a charity of one's choice.
