John Douglass Cates III went to be with the Lord on December 7, 2017, next to his loving wife, Sherri.
Doug was the father of five sons and was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy and son, Ted. A lifelong resident of Burke County, he loved his church, First Baptist Church of Waynesboro, which he joined in 1941. He started Cates Firestone in 1969 and rarely missed a day in the store since then. He served various positions in the community, such as a past member of the Exchange Club, and was a member of the Bilo Coffee Club. He truly enjoyed fishing and golfing and loved his dog, Jack. A summary of his life would be: "He fought the good fight, He finished the race, He kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7.
