Joe Edenfield

November 24, 1925 — August 28, 2009

Waynesboro, GA - Joseph Albert "Joe" Edenfield, 83, entered into the Lord's presence on Friday, August 28, 2009, at his home after an extended illness. A native of Screven County, he was born November 24, 1925 to the late Joseph Carlton and Ethel Zeigler Edenfield. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marceline Odom Edenfield; three sisters, Ruby Sasser, Bertie Ruth Mooneyham, and Myra Sikes; one brother, Charles Edenfield; and one step-grandson, Jason Riggs.

Mr. Edenfield was a devoted member of Bethel Baptist Church for 54 years where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Adult Men's Sunday School Class. For 50 years, he owned and operated Edenfield's Repair Shop where his talents for welding and fabricating were described as works of art. He was also a prominent farmer in Burke County with his sons, Tommy and Shorty, and grandson, Brad.In 1999, the Edenfield Family was recognized as the county's Agricultural Family of the Year.

He is survived by his wife, Daisy Riggs Edenfield; his five children, Joe L. Edenfield (Patty) of Martinez, Barbara Jenkins (Bobby) of Sardis, Tommy Edenfield (Mary Lynn) of Waynesboro, Robert "Shorty" Edenfield (Sue) of Waynesboro, and Dr. Jacquelyn "Jackie" Edenfield of Tybee Island; five step-children, Sherri Barefield (Johnny), Joyce Johnson (Ernie), Polly Lively (Tim), J. R. Riggs (Chari), and Jimmy Riggs (Margie), all of Waynesboro; 19 grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Derek Edenfield (Allison), Maj. Phillip Edenfield (Eun), who is currently serving in Iraq, Brad Edenfield (Morgan), Will Edenfield,and Doug Jenkins (Felice), Alicia J. Gulley (Bobby), Rhonda J. Fry (Jerry), Bobby Jenkins, Jr. (Sandi), JamieB. Braswell (Eric), John Barefield, Calvin Johnson, Rob Johnson, Brent Lively (Diann), Jennifer Lively, Chris Riggs, Josh Riggs (April), Chad Riggs, Alysia R. Flakes (Gary), and Auston Riggs; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Edenfieldwill be rememberedas a manof character andtall stature, with an even larger heart.Whether you called him Dad, Daddy, Grandpa, Papa, or just "Mr. Joe," hehada generous spirit and offered a loving smile.

Visitation was Sunday, August 30, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at DeLoach Funeral Home, Waynesboro. Funeral services were held Monday, August 31, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Matt Shryock officiating.Interment followed at Burke Memorial Gardens, Waynesboro. Grandsons, Doug Jenkins, Derek Edenfield,Brad Edenfield and Will Edenfield;step-grandsons, Chad Riggs and Eric Braswell served as pallbearers.Honorary pallbearers were the Deacons of Bethel Baptist Church and the Adult Men's Sunday School Class.
