Joan W. Carpenter, age 75, of Hephzibah, passed away Friday, December 5, 2014, at her residence with her family surrounding her.
She was born June 10, 1939 in Gordon, GA., to the late John Lee and Mattie Smallwood Ward, Sr.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allie J. Carpenter; a son, Darryl Ward and 2 brothers, Lee Ward and Kenneth Ward.
Joan was in the Order of the Eastern Star, Richmond Chapter 463. She retired from Gracewood Baptist Church as their secretary and she was a member of Hephzibah Baptist Church.
She is survived by her children; Wayne (Robbie) Ward of Kite, GA., Allie J. (Tina) Carpenter III of Hephzibah, Brenda C. (Doug) Wasden of Hephzibah, Linda C. (Jimmy) Sharpton of Laurens, S.C. and Steven C. Carpenter of Hephzibah; 2 step-sons, Michael (Patty) Carpenter of CA., and Jerome (Debbie) Carpenter of CA.; 2 sisters, Mary W. Kilgore of Hephzibah and Shery Switzer of North Augusta, S.C.; 2 brothers, John Lee Ward, Jr. of Hephzibah and Paul R. Ward of Tampa, FL.; 21 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends Sunday 5 pm to 7 pm at Hephzibah Funeral Home, HWY 88, with Services Monday 11 am at Hephzibah Baptist Church with Rev. John Beck and Rev. Mike Andrews, officiating. Burial to follow in Hephzibah Vance Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bryan Wasden, Phillip Wasden, Daniel Sharpton, Terry Ward, Timothy Blackman and Brad Kilgore. Honorary Pallbearer will be Brandon Whitehead.
