James McCord Williams of Waynesboro died Saturday, June 29, 2019, at the age of 94. He is survived by his two daughters, Lynn Williams and Lea Williams both of Augusta; two grandchildren, Sam (Ila) Jenkins of Augusta and Ashlea (Kyle) Crout of Mount Pleasant, SC; and two great grandchildren, Bennett and Caroline Crout. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Sarah Elizabeth Williams; and his only son, Michael Warren Williams.
Mr. Williams retired from Southern Bell after 40 years of service as a Group Manager over eight rural counties in the CSRA. He served his country as a proud Marine, as a combat crewman, and as a machine gunner in a dive bomber. He received two Distinguished Flying Crosses and eight Air Medals for his service.
He was a past member of the Augusta Optimist Club, Waynesboro Rotary Club, Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, Old Savannah River Boat Club, and Old Burke County Hunting Club. Mr. Williams was currently a member of the Marine Corps Association, American Legion Post 120, and Telephone Pioneers of America.
He was a dedicated outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He also enjoyed genealogy and archaeology of Native Americans. He was a former certified Deputy Conservation Ranger with the Department of Natural Resources Game and Fish Division. Also, he was a certified State Peace Officer, serving for 15 years as a volunteer.
Burial, along with his wife, Sarah, will be at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA with full military honors and will be held at a later date.
Mr. Williams enjoyed a full life with his family, friends, and the great outdoors.
