Waynesboro, GA - James W. Cleary, 84, passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at Burke Medical Center.
Mr. Cleary was born in Evanston, Illinois, in 1926, to the late Francis Joseph and Catherine Marie (O'Connell) Cleary. After serving in the Navy in World War II, he studied organic chemistry at Loyola University and Washington State University, where he received his doctorate. He worked as a polymer research chemist for Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, OK, Dartco in Augusta, GA, and James River Corporation in Neenah, WI. He was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 1956, was honored for 62 years of service to the American Chemical Society, and holds over 50 patents. He married Ann Adams on November 19, 1960, at St. John Church in Bartlesville, OK, and later divorced.In 1998, he retired to Waynesboro, GA, where he was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
An avid singer, Mr. Cleary was a member of choirs everywhere that he lived, including the Bartlesville Community Singers, the Appleton (Wisconsin) MacDowell Male Chorus, and the Choir of Saint Mary on the Hill in Augusta. He also enjoyed farming and gardening. He participated in the Knights of Columbus and donated blood regularly to the Red Cross.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Celeste Frances Cleary.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2010, at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waynesboro, GA, with Fr. Patrick Otor, MSP officiating.Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive visitors on Friday, August 27, 2010, from 6:00-8:00 pm and a Rosary Service will be held at 6:00pm at DeLoach-McKerley Funeral Home.
Survivors include sisters, Patricia Weimer and Rosemary Fenelon, both of Chicago; son, Kevin Michael Cleary, his wife Naoko, grandson Atticus and granddaughter Kirsten of Kamakura, Japan; daughter, Karen Elizabeth Cleary, her husband Michael Kersey, and grandson Evan of Austin, TX; daughter, Celeste Ann Cleary and her husband Mark Portier of New Paltz, NY; and daughter, Heather Catherine Cleary of Los Angeles, CA; and also by his church family at Sacred Heart.
