James Ralph “Jimmy” Johnson, 77, entered into rest Saturday, July 15, 2023. He was born in Richmond County on September 25, 1945, to the late Lois Weatherford Johnson and Jessie Eugene Johnson, Sr. Jimmy was a lifelong resident of Burke County. He was a graduate of Waynesboro High School and attended Augusta State University. He was a faithful member of Hephzibah Baptist Church, where he served on the Active Board of Deacons for many years, as well as taught Sunday School. Jimmy began his own construction business, J.R. Johnson Construction Company, in the mid seventies. He was a sought after custom home builder. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mary Ann Owens Johnson; brother, Jessie Eugene Johnson, Jr.; and sister, Helen Johnson Bailey.
Jimmy is survived by three children, Jim Johnson (Karla) of Waynesboro, Julie Gandy (Donald) of Waynesboro, Nancy Cox (Joe) of Louisville; seven grandchildren, Jenny Tootle (Brannon), Jay Johnson (Cheyanne), Colby Gandy (Hollis Ann), Connor Gandy, JC Cox, Owen Cox, and Noah Cox; one great granddaughter, Rowan Tootle; three sisters, Nell Johnson Mobley, Lucile Johnson Cheeks, Virginia Johnson Mead (Shorty); one brother, Richard Weatherford Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held 3:00pm Wednesday, July 19 at Hephzibah Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Wren officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour to the service.
Active pallbearers will be Colby Gandy, Connor Gandy, Jay Johnson, Brannon Tootle, JC Cox, Owen Cox, and Noah Cox. Honorary pallbearers will be the employees and sub-contractors of J.R. Johnson Construction Company, Dr. Johnny Christian, Dr. Frank Carter, and Dr. Harvey Sanders.
