James "J.E." Eugene Thomas
October 20, 1945 — October 8, 2020
Born in Burke County on October 20, 1945, he was a son of the late E.S. Thomas and Edna Avrett Thomas. He was an Insurance Salesman for United Insurance in Augusta and most recently gave estimates for J.S. Rowe in Hephzibah. Mr. Thomas was a member of Rosemont Baptist Church in Waynesboro. He enjoyed golfing, cooking and gardening and was affectionately known as "Pops" and "Big Daddy".
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister and her husband, Barbara and Bill Aldridge, and three brothers, George Leroy Thomas, Billy Clark Thomas, and John David Thomas.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy J. Thomas; a son, Gene Thomas (Shannon) of Augusta; a daughter, Rene Wilson (Norman) of Millen; three step children, Andy James of Keysville, Merle James (Lesa) of Augusta, and Dorothy James (John) of Hephzibah; four grandchildren, Alexandria Powell of Augusta, Brock Thomas of Augusta, Justin Wilson (Brittany) of Millen, and Zachary Wilson of Millen; two step grandchildren, Andrea James of Augusta, and Paige James of Hephzibah; one great grandson, John Michael Wilson; siblings, Melvis McCullough of Waynesboro, Dorothy Dickey (Junior) of Fair Play, SC, Edward Thomas (Sarah) of Waynesboro, Norman Thomas of Waynesboro; Becky Phillips (Joey) of Waynesboro; sisters in law, Alice Bell Thomas and Kaye Barefield Thomas both of Waynesboro; and many nieces, nephews and other family members.
The family will receive friends from 5:00pm – 7:00pm on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at DeLoach-McKerley-Prescott Funeral Home.
