Following an extended illness, Waynesboro resident Hugh Cal Johnson, Jr., 68, departed this life peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Sept. 2.Funeral services will be held on Friday morning, Sept. 5, at 11 a.m. at the DeLoach-McKerley Funeral Home Chapel in Waynesboro with the Reverend David Boggs officiating; burial will follow at the Burke Memorial Gardens in Waynesboro.The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Thursday, Sept. 4, from 6 – 8 p.m.
A native of Waynesboro, he was the son of Mrs. Hugh Cal Johnson and the late Mr. Johnson of Waynesboro.Educated in the public schools of Burke County, he spent most of his life involved in agribusiness, owning and operating a large family farm near Bartow, GA, and later managing a sod farm operation on the land.For the past 10 years, he had been a manager for the Number One Recycling Corporation headquartered in Wadley.An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and was a car enthusiast, especially Corvettes.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of 45 years, Shirlee Tucker Johnson, his sons Bradley Hugh Johnson and his wife Jessica of Augusta and Benjamin Scott Johnson also of Augusta.In addition to his father, he was also predeceased by his sister Dorothy Dean Johnson of Waynesboro.
Pallbearers will be Robert Wayne Crockett, Jr., Jonathan Drake Crockett, James Talmadge (Jay) Eastmead, Jr., and Robert E. Crockett.
The family requests that memorials be made to the charity of one's choice.
