George Franklin Agerton, Jr.

September 15, 1931 — December 5, 2023

George Franklin Agerton, Jr., 92, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2023, surrounded by his children. A lifelong resident of Vidette, he was a veteran, a farmer, a visionary, an entrepreneur, and owner of the Vidette Country Store for 40 years.

He married his high school sweetheart, Pansy Abbott, and shortly after was drafted into the Navy for the Korean War and spent the next 5 years serving his country.   He came home to Vidette to farm with his father George.

As a farmer, he was frequently recognized for his accomplishments and unique methods, many times being featured in The True Citizen newspaper with the first bale of cotton of the year and described as “A master with the plow” by former county agent Bill Craven.

As he reached his later years, he was constantly doing something as sitting down was simply not in his genes. In and out of the store, in his garden, on his tractor, in his golf cart with his dog and constant companion Precious, picking up pecans, or going fishing. Frequently taking his garden vegetables, fish, pecans or scuppernongs to friends or just looking for someone to talk to he was constantly visible, and some say an icon in Vidette.

He leaves a legacy of 2 children, Trip Agerton (Judy) and Connie Agerton; five grandchildren, Brad Agerton (Kaylyn), Austin Agerton, Lizzie Moats, Morgan Von Behren (Jason), and Matt Mewbourne (Kayley); and numerous great grandchildren.

Graveside Services will be held 2:00pm Thursday, December 7 at Rose Dhu Cemetery in Vidette.

Honorary pallbearers will be Brad Agerton, Austin Agerton, Buddy Wren, Mike Wood, Marion Dukes, Chad Shivers, Steve Bailey, and Snap Reeves.
