Waynesboro, GA. - Emily Elliott Cox, 100, entered peacefully into rest at her home on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.

Emily was born in Oxford, GA. on August 4th, 1912 and was a daughter of Jackson Latimore Elliott and Georgie Smith Elliott. She graduated from Newton County Public School, Wesleyn Conservatory of Music in Macon, and Atlanta Conservatory of Music & Fine Arts, where she majored in piano and dramatic arts. After having taught for a year each in Conyers, Monroe, and Concord, she came to Waynesboro in 1934 where she taught Speech, Tap Dancing, and Drama. In 1935 she married Sidney C. Cox, Jr. For many years thereafter she gave private piano lessons. She served as an organist and Choir Director at the First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro for 60 years and more recently was the pianist for the Vidette Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. She was the co-founder of the Waynesboro Book Club in 1936 and an active member for 50 years until it was dissolved. She was an honorary member of the Waynesboro Rotary Club where she was a Paul Harris Fellow and served as the club pianist. She was a member of the Ladies Golf Association. Much of her life revolved around the piano. She started taking lessons at age five and soon was playing for Sunday School at age twelve. Her first job was at age thirteen when she played at the Theater for Silent Movies until sound came out. She got the job after auditioning in the dark and playing by ear as appropriate for various scenes. She was voted as Sole Cheerleader at Newton County High School for Football and Basketball games. Emily played for an untold number of weddings and funerals throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 40 years, Sidney C. Cox, Jr., son Jackson Elliott Cox (killed in Vietnam), brothers, Charlie and George Elliott, sisters, Ruth Pratt and Elizabeth Heard.

She is survived by a son, Sidney C. Cox III, daughter-in-law, Elizabeth H. Cox, four grandchildren, Steve L. Cox (Robin), Sid E. Cox, Ria C. Sheridan (Brian), and Jackson E. Cox II (Karen), mother of the grandchildren, Nell R. Cox, two step-grandchildren, Kimberly E. Belk (Patrick), and Carlyle Jerome Broome II, nine great grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, and numerous grandnieces, and grandnephews.

Friends may call at DeLoach-McKerley Funeral Home in Waynesboro between the hours of 6:00-8:00 pm on Thursday, August 30.

The funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro at 11:00 am on Friday, August 31. Rev. Jim Knight will officiate. Interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery in Waynesboro. Pallbearers will be: Roy F. Chalker, Jr., Dr. Charles Coleman, Sam F. Maguire, Seaborn Jones, Henry C. Hopkins, III, Sidney E. Cox, Jackson E. Cox, II, Steve L. Cox, and Brian Sheridan. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Waynesboro Rotary Club.
