Edward Joseph Weis, Sr.

Edward Joseph Weis, Sr., 85, of Shell Bluff, GA, husband of 62 years to Sevena Lively Weis, entered into rest at University Hospital on Monday, June 30, 2014. Edward is the son of the late John Peter and Marie Butzen Weis, of Wilmette, Illinois. Also preceding him in death are his beloved aunt Anne Butzen, also of Wilmette, and his brothers John P. Weis, Charles Weis, and Peter Weis, all of the Chicago area.
Edward was a native of Wilmette, Illinois, having made the Shell Bluff community his home for the last 48 years.He served in the U. S. Army Signal Corps during the Korean War, after which he worked as an Electronic Technician with the U. S. Postal Service, having earned an Associate Degree at Augusta Technical School. He retired from the Postal Service after 26 years.He was a faithful parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waynesboro, GA and he served honorably with the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.Edward was industrious and inventive, a skilled carpenter and mechanic, and a man who could fix anything. He often submitted ideas for machine adaptations to the U.S. Postal Service, some of which were implemented. He was also a loving father and husband who enjoyed family trips and enthusiastically awaited all family gatherings.
In addition to his wife, Edward is survived by his sisters, Patricia Miller and Mary Ann King, and his sisters-in-law, Barbara Weis, Judy Weis, and Cathy Weis. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Atta Lively Wade, Octama (Jimmy) Lively Poole, Katy (Chester) Lively Powell and Margie Lively, and Margaret Brinson. He is also survived by his nine children: Edward (Anne) Weis, Jr. of Aiken, SC; Michael (Gail) Weis, of Shell Bluff, GA; Carol (Steve) O'Pry, also of Shell Bluff; Jane (Scott) Lewis, of Evansville, IN; Deborah (Peter) Mak, of Alexandria, VA; Gregory Weis, of Evans, GA; Audrey (Richard) Smith of North Augusta, SC; Phillip (Sheila) Weis, of East Dubuque, IL; and Missey Weis Greene, of Shell Bluff. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. His grandchildren, named in order of their births, are Nicole (Ben) Snipes, Ashley (Michael) Greenwood, Chris Weis, Kellie (Kenny) Smith, Ginny (Brad) Siverhus, Michael Weis, Dr. Kevin (Lynn) Weis, Latoya Ball, Tiffany Ball, Brandon (Katie) Weis, Zachary (Danielle) Lewis, Natalie West, Sevena Lewis, Steven (Brooke) O'Pry, Danika West, Juliana Smith, David Weis, Patrick Smith, Thomas Weis, Macy Weis, Daniel Weis, Alexandra Smith, Geena Weis, Rachel Greene, Krista Weis, Jacob Greene, Kimber Weis, and Tanner Weis. Great-grandchildren are Alexis Axman, Nicolas O'Pry, Emily Axman, Shaiteanna Ball, Donnell Kinnison, Spencer Siverhus, Anna Newman, Justin Jenkins, Michaela Weis, Owen Greenwood, Sam Weis, Jack Greenwood, Ethan Weis, Sadie Weis, Maddie Weis, Landon Flanagen, Ivy Lewis, Sara Cate Greenwood, Tripp O'Pry, Jonathan Weis, Ava Smith, Lucas O'Pry, and Hazel Lewis.
Visitation will be at DeLoach-McKerley Funeral Home in Waynesboro, GA on Thursday, July 3, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary service preceding visitation at 5:00.A funeral mass will be celebrated at First United Methodist Church in Waynesboro on Saturday, July 5, at 11 am. Burial will be at Botsford Baptist Church Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers, with members of the American Legion serving as honorary pallbearers.
