After a brief illness, Edgelle C. Screws entered the gates of Heaven on February 19, 2018, and was greeted by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and her husband Otis. Born in Canton, Georgia to Floy and Gordon Chester, she moved to Wadley for her senior year in high school and met the love of her life Otis Screws.After 6 dates they got married and moved to Waynesboro where they lived a happy life until his death in 2015.A member of Rosemont Baptist Church since 1964, Edgelle taught the 5 year old Sunday School class for over 50 years, served as Sunbeam director, WMU director, on the Dcor Team, sang in the choir, and served as president of the Saints Alive Senior Adult Ministry.She and Otis enjoyed taking planning the outings for the Saints Alive group, making sure every detail from the restaurants to the hotels, to the entertainment was top notch so their group was guaranteed the best trip.Edgelle worked at Goldberg's Department Store and as the Activity Director at Brentwood Nursing Home.She volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader for Troop 40, enjoyed the WBCRD Coffee Club, camping with her family and friends and traveling with Otis on many bus trips and vacations especially to Myrtle Beach and Winfield Campground. Serving Jesus was important to her but her family came in a very close second.She set a great example of what a mother's love was – unconditional and she would do without so her children could have whatever they needed.She always baked their birthday cakes in fancy shapes and hosted the best parties.Her talent for cake decorating led her to making the wedding cakes for her own children's weddings.An avid reader, she enjoyed Bible Studies for the ladies at church and Christian romance novels.As she her health declined, she became very creative in her adult coloring books and quickly worked the word searches she did to keep her mind active. She loved crafting and collecting cookbooks.For Christmas several years ago, she printed a cookbook of her favorite recipes to give each member of her family.She always had a welcoming smile and shared have a blessed day for all she met. It was with her giving spirit she continued to help others by becoming an eye donor.
She is survived by daughter Sherrell and Tony Gay, their children Michelle and Chris White and Harrison, April and Jeremy Gay and Sadie, Tracy and Shane Ide and Roy; Daughter Robin and Wes Ford and their children Benjamin and Libby, Son Otis Jr. and Patricia Screws and son Payton, sisters and brothers in law, and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Jerry Richardson, WH Reddick, Edward Thomas, Thomas Daniel, Kenneth English and Johnny Braswell. Honorary Pallbearers are members of the Saints Alive Senior Adult Ministry.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 from 6:00PM-8:00PM at DeLoach-McKerley-Prescott Funeral Home. The Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 11:00AM at Rosemont. Burial to follow in Burke Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Rosemont Vision Fund.
