Waynesboro, GA- Durwood Hayes, Sr., 93, entered into rest Monday, December 9, 2013. He was retired from the United States Postal Service. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of Green's Cut United Methodist Church. He was a member and former commander of Waynesboro American Legion Post #120. He was proud to consider himself a member of the greatest generation ever.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nona Lowe Hayes and Grady Hayes; 3 sisters, Wanette H. Williams, Bobbie Nell H. Odom, and Edna H. Hayslip.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Barefield Hayes; 2 sons, Woody Hayes (Sarah) and Randy Hayes both of Waynesboro; 5 grandchildren, Tiffany Gibson (Scott), Samantha Turner, Matthew Hayes, Eric Vierling, and Shaun Anderson; 2 great grandchildren, Tyler Hayes and Andrew Gibson; sister, Betty H. Oliver (Rev. Tom) of Waynesboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Wednesday, December 11 at the funeral home.
Funeral Services will be 11 am Thursday, December 12 at the funeral home. Rev. Tom Oliver and Rev. Jerry Sharpe will officiate. Interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Alan Williams, Bill Harrell, Ricky Oliver, Mike Barefield, Chris Barefield, and John Barefield. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of American Legion Post #120, Ernest Johnson, and Dr. Francis Ford.
