Dennis Arnold Mattson
December 11, 1944 – January 4, 2016
Dennis Arnold Mattson was born on December 11, 1944, in Ashland, Wisconsin, as the oldest in a family of four boys. His parents, Arnold and Ruth (Koski) Mattson, moved from Wisconsin to southern California in the early 1950s when, after the death of their second born son, the family physician suggested a drier climate.
As the school years sped by, Dennis not only cared for his baby brother and worked at the local grocery store, but he fervently participated in coral society activities. After graduation from Fontana High School, more commonly known as FOHI, he was promoted to management and decided to attend college. At the completion of his third year of college, he joined the US Air Force and supported his county's effort in Vietnam. While serving as a parts specialist, he was injured during a bombing and transferred state-side to undergo surgery.
After his service days, while visiting a close friend that lived in Atlanta, Georgia, he was swept off his feet by a Burke County native, Iris Drucilla (Hurst), and quickly realized his life would never be complete if she was not integrally fused. On February 25, 1973, in Las Vegas, Nevada, with her two daughters tagging along, he married the love of his life and began a path of committed devotion. The years led the family from Atlanta, Georgia to England and then Burke County, where the family settled. After 12 years of service to his country, due to family illnesses, Dennis departed from the military as a disabled staff sergeant veteran. As he began civilian life, the continued desire to serve his country led him to pursue a career with the locally-based John Deere and International Harvester operations where he was able to assist the backbone of his country – the American farmer.
Dennis was a committed Christian, from his young days as a member of the First Lutheran Church in Fontana, California, to his mature days as a member of the Sardis Baptist Church in Sardis, Georgia and Rosemont Baptist Church in Waynesboro, Georgia. He was loved and respected by all who knew him, and he will be greatly missed by all.
He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his three brothers (Duane, Douglas and Donald).
He leaves behind 2 daughters (Candace and Amanda), 6 granddaughters (Darian, Rain, Brenna, Alex, Paris and July) and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces.
His memorial was held by the Deloach-McKerley-Prescott Funeral home on January 9, 2016, in Waynesboro, Georgia.
After a private family moment on January 23, 2016, he was laid to rest over his wife's heart at the Sardis Baptist Cemetery in Sardis, Georgia.
