Clarence Ray "Sonny" Swint, 79 of Waynesboro, GA passed away peacefully at Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home on Tuesday, December 03, 2013; he was a native of Richmond County and a U.S. Navy War Veteran.
His memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 10th at East Burke Baptist Church of Sardis, GA with Rev. Ernest Johnson Jr. officiating at 10:00 a.m. It will be followed by a committal service with full military honors at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. in Milledgeville, GA with Chaplain Lt. Nashaunna S. Sanders officiating on behalf of the U.S. Navy.
He served as a Petty Officer 1st Class in the U.S. Navy as a CE1, Construction Electrician / cable splicing technician with the U.S. Naval Construction Force Seabees. During his time in the Navy he served three tours with the U.S. Naval Support Activity at Da-Nang, Republic of Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Also he deployed forward with the United States Seventh Fleet at Yokosuka, Japan. He also served at the Naval Communication Station at Adak, Alaska known as the "Cold War's westernmost-link." He also served at the United States Naval Station at Guant¡namo Bay, Cuba (also called Gitmo or GTMO). He retired from active duty in June of 1978. Following his active duty he gave 10 more years to the U.S. Navy Reserve. Mr. Swints civilian employment after his service to the U.S. Navy includes working for Briarwood Apartments of Waynesboro, GA serving as a manager and maintenance person and with Georgia Power Company of Waynesboro, GA for a number of years driving a dump truck and was also an over the road truck driver for several years before retiring to enjoy life.
Mr. Swints medals and ribbons for his service with the U.S. Navy include the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Navy Good Conduct Medal with three Bronze Stars.
Mr. Swint was preceded in death by his parents John D. and Lois Swint and a brother who died at birth. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years Ellen F. Swint; four stepchildren, Ronnie Below (Betty) of Waynesboro, GA, June Johnson (Rev. Ernest) of Sardis, GA, John Parrish (Pamela) of Baton Rouge, LA and Crystal Weeks (Gary) of Girard, GA, 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one sister Shannon Smith (Larry) of North Augusta, SC, and many nieces and nephews.
